Services - 1st quarter of 2013

Year-on-year drop of sales in services deepened

In Q1 2013, seasonally adjusted sales in services increased, quarter-on-quarter, at constant prices by 0.5%. Non-adjusted sales dropped by 3.0%, year-on-year, and working days adjusted sales dropped by 1.4%. Lower sales compared to the corresponding period of the previous year were recorded by all CZ-NACE divisions of services.

In Q1 2013, seasonally adjusted sales in services ^{1 )} increased at constant prices by 0.5%, quarter-on-quarter. Year-on-year, working days adjusted sales decreased by 1.4% (in Q1 2012 there were 2 working days and at the same time 1 calendar day more), non-adjusted decreased by 3.0%. Lower sales than in the same period of the previous year were recorded by all CZ-NACE divisions of services.

Year-on-year development of seasonally non-adjusted sales in services broken down by CZ-NACE division:

- sales in transportation and storage stagnated (drop by 0.1%). A growth was recorded only in warehousing and support activities for transportation (+4.1%) and water transport (+14.7%). In land transport and transport via pipelines that are the most important as for their volume sales decreased by 0.9%. In air transport, which had to cope with decreases for already the fourth quarter sales dropped by 12.5%. Also at postal and courier activities the decrease continued for already the fifth quarter (this time by -7.1%);

- sales in accommodation and food service activities decreased by 0.8%. The decrease was influenced by development of sales in food and beverage service activities (drop by 2.1%). On the contrary, in accommodation sales continued to grow (+2.4%);

- the decrease of sales in information and communication by 2.7% was the most contributed to by telecommunications (-4.1%). A drop was recorded also at publishing activities (-6.0%), programming and broadcasting activities (-4.8%), and music and motion picture activities (-1.2%). After ten quarters of continual growth, sales in computer programming, consultancy and related activities decreased by 1.5%. Information service activities, which include e.g. press agencies, web portals and webhosting, on the contrary, increased by 1.6%;

- sales in real estate activities dropped by 6.7%. Buying and selling of own real estate and renting and operating of own or leased real estate decreased by 7.1%, as well as real estate activities on a fee or contract basis (-5.7%);

- sales in professional, scientific and technical activities ^{2 )} decreased by 6.3%. Decreases were recorded in all divisions; the most in advertising and market research (drop by 12.8%). Sales for other professional, scientific and technical activities dropped by 5.1%, for legal and accounting activities by 4.8%, and for architectural and engineering activities by 4.2%;

- sales in administrative and support service activities ^{3 )} decreased by 3.2%. Sales increased at security and investigation activities (+1.6%), employment activities (+1.5%), and services to buildings and landscape activities (+0.5%). On the contrary, sales dropped at travel agency, tour operator and other reservation service and related activities (-6.6%), rental and leasing activities (-6.0%), and for office administrative, office support and other business support activities (-5.4%).

Attention:
Starting with the News Release for the first quarter of 2013, the base for short-term statistics changed. Besides the change in the base period at fixed-base indices (that are newly compared to the average of 2010 instead of the average of 2005) also the weighting scheme of the year 2010 was used. In accordance with the methodology of Eurostat, a back-calculation to the year 2009 has been made on the new weights, which entailed a revision of fixed-base and y-o-y indices.
