Decline in construction output continued

In May 2012 the construction output decreased by 3.5%, year-on-year (y-o-y), in real terms. The planning and building control authorities granted by 15.3% less building permits, y-o-y, and the approximate value of permitted constructions dropped by 22.9%, y-o-y. The number of started dwellings dropped by 26.1%, y-o-y, and the number of completed dwellings jumped up by 41.6%, y-o-y.

In May 2012 the construction output decreased by 3.5%, y-o-y, in real terms. The seasonally adjusted construction output in May 2012 was by 2.2% lower, y-o-y. May 2012 was by one working day shorter compared to the same month of the previous year. The seasonally adjusted construction output in May 2012 was at the level of the previous month, compared month-on-month. The production in building construction increased by 2.1% (contribution +1.4 percentage points (p.p.)), y-o-y, and the production of civil engineering construction dropped by 14.6% (contribution -4.9 p.p.), y-o-y. The construction output from this year beginning to the end of May of this year dropped by 25.3% compared to the same period of 2008, the year of boom.

The average registered number of employees 1) in construction enterprises with 50+ employees fell by 4.0%, y-o-y, in May 2012. Their average monthly nominal wage increased by 1.9%, y -o-y, and reached CZK 29 355.

In May 2012 the number of building permits granted dropped by 15.3%, y-o-y; the planning and building control authorities granted 8 952 building permits. The approximate value of the permitted constructions attained CZK 27.9 billion and dropped by 22.9% compared to the same period of 2011.

The number of dwellings started in May 2012 dropped by 26.1%, y-o-y, and attained 2 205 dwellings. The number of dwellings started in multi-dwelling buildings plummeted by 38.7% and in family houses it dropped by 24.8%.

The number of completed dwellings jumped up by 41.6%, y-o-y, and was 2 865 dwellings in May 2012. The number of completed dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings soared by 103.4% due to a higher number of projects completed in Prague. The number of completed dwellings in family houses decreased by 0.8%.

According to Eurostat the WDA (working days adjusted) construction output in the EU27 decreased by 5.1%, y-o-y, in April 2012. Building construction fell by 4.6% and civil engineering construction dropped by 8.6%. Eurostat shall release the data for May 2012 on 18 July 2012 (at 11:00 a.m.).

1) The registered number of employees indicator does not include: persons working under various contracts for work, working owners of enterprises, and cooperating household members, who do not have an employment contract. Data on the registered number of employees in construction also exclude agency workers, who have an employment contract, however, in other activity than construction.
